The moment when leaving church with Boswell, Samuel Johnson finally dismissed Bishop Berkeley’s theory of Empiricism, forcefully kicking a rock.The facial expression reflects not only the imminent physical pain Dr Johnson is about to inflict on himself, but also reflects the frustration and anguish the towering literary genius of 18th century Britain suffered throughout his life.
